Welcome to First Grade!

This year will look a little different for our students. While we ease into school, students will come 2 days a week and learn remotely for the other 3 days.

On days that your child is not at school, they will log on to Seesaw to connect with their teacher and peers.  On Seesaw they will watch the morning meeting and complete assignments that the teacher has posted.

We will use a few learning websites:

*Raz-Kids (Reading)

*IXL (Math and Language Arts)

(Your child's teacher will send home login information for these learning websites.)

Videos to show your child about school during the pandemic:

*Greet from 6 Feet song

*Face mask song

*Keep bad germs away

We are so excited to get started with the 2020-2021 school year! Please ask your child's teacher if you have any questions!

Reading

First graders have just started our third reading unit called “Learning About the World”.
This is our first nonfiction unit of the year. Students are learning how to study their books to learn new
information about a topic. Along with learning about new topics comes learning harder words.
We are learning the following skills:
  • Crashing parts of words together to solve the whole word.
  • Doing a s-l-o-w check to make sure the word you read matches the letters of the word.
  • Don’t get stuck on a word! Back up and get a running start.
  • Re-read to remember all you learned in your book.

Writing

We are working hard in writing!
In our third writing unit, “Writing Non-Fiction Books”, we are starting to write “All About” books.
Students are learning the following:
  • Picking a topic and 5 important facts to teach about it.
  • Writing headings on each page.
  • Teaching with detailed pictures & labels.
We have a lot of work to do in this unit of writing! Please encourage your child by helping them think of a
list of things they know all about. (ie. dogs, barbies, the dentist, etc.)

Math

We have a bunch of mathematicians in our room. We are moving into the fourth unit in Everyday Math.
Students are learning:
  • Measuring length, width, and height using different units (paper clips, cubes, pencils, etc).
  • Representing data in a bar graph.
  • Addition doubles (5+5, 3+3, 2+2, etc).
  • Addition to 10 (8+2, 1+9, 4+6 etc).
  • Addition with 3 numbers.
  • Finding 10 more and 10 less than any number.

Second Step .

Riverton School uses Second Step as our Social Emotional curriculum. In our third unit we are learning about
emotion management.

  • Identifying our own feelings.
  • Strong feelings.
  • Calming down anger.
  • Self-talk for calming down.
  • Managing worry.

Science

Students have just been introduced to the 5 senses- hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste. In our new science
unit, “Waves: Light and Sound”, students will be developing their science skills through
  • Inquiry
  • Prediction
  • Observation
  • Exploration
  • Discussion
  • Recording

Starting the New Year in Room 103

First graders have been working hard and learning new things.

We learned about apples. They come from trees. When it's fall and winter the apples fall off the trees. In fall it's cold. It's a cycle just like a butterfly or a frog.

We learned about how to read nonfiction books. We read about birds, thunder, parks, and how people get places.

We are noticing lots of things about snow and ice during our wiggle break and recess.

We noticed ice can hurt you because it's very hard. We are being careful.

The snow is so hard. The clouds and snow made everything quiet. We can slide faster on the ice.

Be careful, don't run and jump because you will bump on a pointy part and get a cut.
