Reading

First graders have just started our third reading unit called “Learning About the World”.
This is our first nonfiction unit of the year. Students are learning how to study their books to learn new
information about a topic. Along with learning about new topics comes learning harder words.
We are learning the following skills:
  • Crashing parts of words together to solve the whole word.
  • Doing a s-l-o-w check to make sure the word you read matches the letters of the word.
  • Don’t get stuck on a word! Back up and get a running start.
  • Re-read to remember all you learned in your book.

Writing

We are working hard in writing!
In our third writing unit, “Writing Non-Fiction Books”, we are starting to write “All About” books.
Students are learning the following:
  • Picking a topic and 5 important facts to teach about it.
  • Writing headings on each page.
  • Teaching with detailed pictures & labels.
We have a lot of work to do in this unit of writing! Please encourage your child by helping them think of a
list of things they know all about. (ie. dogs, barbies, the dentist, etc.)

Math

We have a bunch of mathematicians in our room. We are moving into the fourth unit in Everyday Math.
Students are learning:
  • Measuring length, width, and height using different units (paper clips, cubes, pencils, etc).
  • Representing data in a bar graph.
  • Addition doubles (5+5, 3+3, 2+2, etc).
  • Addition to 10 (8+2, 1+9, 4+6 etc).
  • Addition with 3 numbers.
  • Finding 10 more and 10 less than any number.

Second Step .

Riverton School uses Second Step as our Social Emotional curriculum. In our third unit we are learning about
emotion management.

  • Identifying our own feelings.
  • Strong feelings.
  • Calming down anger.
  • Self-talk for calming down.
  • Managing worry.
